21 October World Photonics Day
30 June 2021 | 15:58

It's time to celebrate the photonics that enables the technology in your smartphone, the light in your home, or the health equipment that saves your life.

In general, the definition of Photonics is still not very well understood. Although most people are familiar with lasers, fiber optics, optical components in cell phones, they may still not have heard of the word Photonics. Photonics is the science and technology of light. It covers all products and processes related to the emission, manipulation, transmission and detection of light and other electromagnetic radiation. Photonics affects all of us in our daily lives, improving food production with remote sensing, improving healthcare and keeping a close eye on global warming.

Photonics will indeed come. Along with the advances in electronics and electricity that the electron made in the 20th century, the photon will also make do with photonics for the technology of the 21st century. October 21 is Photonics Day, as we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of our adoption of the 299,792,458 km/s speed of light.

The European Commission has long recognized the potential of Photonics and has strongly supported the future-shaping photonics technology. In 2009, the European Commission identified Photonics as one of the five European Key Enabling Technologies and invested 700 Million Euros through the European Research and Innovation Program "Horizon 2020". Shortly after the start of H2020, it launched the Photonics Public-Private Partnership, a long-term commitment between the European Commission and photonics stakeholders in Europe.

In fact, the essence of the work is to create a better quality of life for everyone with Photonics. You too should consider photonics the next time you touch your smartphone, watch your smart TV, or perhaps get into a self-driving vehicle.
